Here is a rare, possibly one-of-a-kind, artifact of multifaceted history from the early 1960s.。In the 1940s, 50s and 60s women's fastpitch softball was one of the few places in the world where female athletes could compete in a sporting event at the highest level.。In Portland there was a team sponsored by a local flower shop (Erv Lind Florists) that was a perennial powerhouse, advancing to the national championship tournament multiple times, and winning it in 1944 and 1964. 。I grew up reading stories about the Erv Lind Florists softball dynasty in the sports page of the Oregonian newspaper. During that era they were certainly one of the hottest and most beloved sports stories in this neck of the woods. Everyone seemed to have adopted them as our own personal darlings and champions.。However, although it was completely unspoken, and totally hidden in the closet at the time, almost all of the women, on all of these teams, nationally and locally, were lesbians. 。And, of course, this was a time when the slightest hint or whisper of being "queer" could ruin an individual socially, economically, politically, and morally. 。Indeed, many careers were destroyed in just that way, whether the accusation was accurate or not.。For female athletes of that era to be able to do what they were good at and loved, this was a difficult time, to say the least.。__________________________________________________________。This particular softball is a signed game ball featuring 13 the members of the 1962 Erv Lind Florists fastpitch softball team.。When researching the signatures on this ball I discovered a fascinating trove of LGBTQ reflective history embedded in several sources:。I found two lengthy interviews with members of the team which were compiled and published by the Gay and Lesbian Archives of the Pacific Northwest (GLAPN). 。I found a couple of national publications specializing in the history of women's fastpitch softball that had historical stories about the Florists and their members. 。And sadly, I found a lot of information woven into the obituaries of several of the 1962 team members, now passed.。And, in all of this material the name of one person was most often mentioned, and stood out as being special: Louise Chris Mazzuca. 。Chris Mazzuca pitched for the Florists for four years near the end of the 1950s and in the early 1960s. She was phenomenal and nearly un-hittable; she pitched nine perfect games and 35 no-hitters during her career. She was inducted into the Softball Hall of Fame in 1972.。You may find the transcript of her GLAPN interview at the Oregon Historical Society, and it certainly is an eye-opener if you are interested in Queer Heroes.。_______________________________________________________________。The bottom line I read from everybody associated with the Erv Lind Florists, past and present, is that times have changed for the better.。Many of the women who signed this ball went on to long term careers in education, coaching, and counseling. And many left a legacy that resonates through the actualization of title IX and beyond. 。And, maybe not surprisingly, there is a deep kinship still felt among many members of that team, and that time, that persists through the present. Indeed, some of the women (though not all) remain as partners and closest friends from that time.。The ball itself is a McGregor 100-D, 12 inch, and frankly I did not know what I had when I originally picked it up at an estate sale. I thought it might have been a signed ball from a Little League or high school softball team. 。Instead, it turned out to be an amazing piece of history from the early era of women's liberation.。Thanks for stopping by Portland Pandemonium, and please keep coming back,。Daniel。
